History Sassy Treats was conceived in August 2001 because of a lack, in the Australian marketplace, of healthy, tasty treats and truly natural, fresh, nutritious meals for my dog, Smudge. My then 7 year old dog Smudge, suffered severely from skin allergies - itching and scratching all the time - and she had lost most of her coat, hid under the bed most of the day, and was intolerant to children. I spent thousands of dollars on allergen testing and inoculating under instructions from a veterinarian. After 18 months without result, I realised there must be something else involved. It turned out Smudge was “allergic” to processed foods; more specifically, all the preservatives and below human grade ingredients that are used to make dog food. My extensive research taught me that although you cannot cure a true allergy, most overreactions to common allergens are exacerbated by a poor nutritional diet.

Poor nutrition from commercial processed foods are a main cause of illness in modern dogs. These foods can lead to immune system suppression, liver, kidney and heart diseases, as well as pancreatitis and diabetes.* I started making treats and four basic meals for my dog. The results were improved coat, behaviour and general health. I tested the meals on my mother’s dog who displayed many of the same “symptoms” and, within a month, her dog’s coat grew back. Now, 5 years on, we even have a vegetarian, gluten-free and red meat free selection of Treats and Main Courses available, for hyper-allergic pets. The success of our dog range preceded a new range of Treats and Main Courses for our feline friends and hoofed companions -Sassy Treats for your CAT and Sassy Treats for your HORSE. Once again, we are getting a great response - healthier happier pets needing less veterinary care.

* December 1995, the British Journal of Small Animal Practice Business features Promoting Sassy Treats. Since 2002, extreme customer satisfaction, maximum word-of-mouth and a minimum advertising spend has increased this business from 4 local Sydney clients, to over 100; and expanded to Melbourne and Brisbane markets with deliveries-to-your-door within 48 hours for a minimum order of $30 from our on-line menu. Sassy Treats is promoted in the market place by doing Council endorsed Pet Awareness days, Sustainability Expos, Pet Expos, Organic Expos, Horses shows, Festivals and direct marketing in parks where dogs are being walked. Advertising in the media is kept to a minimum, as our primary marketing tool is viral marketing. However, Sassy Treats has advertised in Pet magazines, Horse Show programmes, local newspapers, on line pet directories and most recently in the soon to be launched green pages, and green directory.

Customer Service Exceptional customer service has given the Sassy Treats leverage from the start: 100% prompt delivery, specialised diets, ease of contact, a deep knowledge of breeds, ailments and food remedies, and an understanding of each client. The expansion of the business has merely improved this strong customer service by increasing the methods and means for client contact. New clients are phoned prior to their first delivery to ensure that their initial order is the most appropriate for the needs of their animal, and to confirm delivery information, payment options and subscription to our monthly newsletter, where among useful information, pet birthdays are celebrated! All clients are sent their preference of a reminder email or SMS prior to their regular delivery, and are always informed of any menu changes due to supplier shortages.

If a pet doesn’t like a particular meal, all remaining ones in deliverable condition are replaced with the next order. For regular clients who may have not replied, their usual order is put on the delivery truck just in case they confirm at last minute; for any who would rather pick up their order, Sassy Treats is always open by appointment after normal working hours.

If a client has forgotten to cancel a delivery, the order is returned at no cost or obligation. If an interstate order goes astray, resolution is ASAP replacement. For owners living too remotely for reliable, quality product delivery, Sassy Treats assists with information on natural diets for their pets, and is always an email, or phone resource for useful animal health and behavioural tips.
