Ways to be more energy efficient around the home

Here at Green at Heart, we would like to share a couple to tips to make your home and dwelling more energy efficient both for your benefits and the benefit of the environment.

Our first tip is to work with nature by improving shading and ventilation. Start with enhancing air flow and breeze paths. We recommend using external shading and curtains / blinds to prevent hear from entering into your. This is much more efficient than using fans and air conditioners to cool down your home when it gets hot.

With devices like fridges and freezers, they tend to use up a lot of power. So if you have a second fridge or freezer that you're not using, we recommend you turn them off. It can end up costing you up to $250 per year. You should also check the seals of your fridges to make sure that they work properly and replace them if needed. If you are looking for a new fridge, than you should always consider purchasing one with the highest star rating as they will pay itself back in power savings.

Hot water systems are something that needs attention as well. They tend to use up to 25% of your power - so converting your system to off peak would be a good idea. You should also consider putting it on a timer or turning it off over the summer to save money.
