Here at Hydro Solutions, we have been involved with BP Billiton Iron Ore doing environmental auditing of their Pilbara Iron Ore Operations.
Our aim is to have an environmental audit to collate the contaminated sites register. This was undertaken on behalf of BHPB, in compliance with the Contaminated Sites Bill 2000.
Nine operational sites throughout the Pilbara were reviewed, including:
Mt Whaleback, Yandi (Marillana Creek), Jimblebar, Ore Body 23/25, Redmont Railcamp, Yarrie/Nimingarra, Finucane Island and Nelson Point.
A review of existing site investigation data was undertaken and a list of potentially contaminated sites was compiled. A walkover survey of each area was undertaken together with a preliminary sampling exercise involving surface or shallow subsurface soils. A contaminated sites register was compiled including soil and groundwater analyses with comparison to applicable NEPC 1999 and ANZECC 2000 guidelines.
Report formatting was compatible with a GIS database for future development. An initial qualitative risk assessment was undertaken using the BHP OHS&E guidelines.
Recommendations were made for an appropriate environmental management plan for each area.
