So what exactly is this solar and how does it work? 

That's one of the questioned we get asked a lot. In fact, it's pretty simple and there is not need to get all scientific for a simple explanation of just how solar functions. 

A solar panel is simply a packaged interconnected group of solar cells. These cells are also known as photovoltaic cells or PV cells. A group of solar panels - or a solar system will help generate and supply electricity from the sun's rays. These systems can be used for both commercial and residential applications.

In general, a PV system will include an array of solar panels, an inverter, batteries - only for off grid systems - and interconnecting wiring.

There are two main types of Solar PV systems - one is off grid - which is generally found in rural areas where they can't get access to the electrical grid. The other is grid connect - generally used for residential areas where the electrical grid can be easily accessed.
